Former House Speaker and 2012 GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich in an interview with “Fox & Friends” on Thursday slammed the long list of Democrats refusing to attend the Donald Trump's inauguration.

He called the Congressmen and women protesting the ceremony “small and silly,” arguing that the event is not about whether they agree with Trump or the Republican Party, but about honoring America and its democracy.

"The inauguration is not about Republicans. It's not about Donald Trump,” said Gingrich. “The inauguration is about America. Why would you abandon America?"

"It doesn't matter which team wins," he argued. "We are a naturally optimistic country. I went to two Obama inaugurals feeling positive about the future. I went to Clinton inaugurals."

"All they're doing is making themselves look small and silly," Gingrich fired.

Nearly 70 Democrats are skipping the inauguration ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Friday, where Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States.

The list includes civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and outspoken Trump critic Rep. Raul Luiz (D-Calif.).
