A former bodyguard for Fidel Castro claims that the Cuban dictator ran a drug-smuggling operation that pumped millions of dollars worth of cocaine into the United States.

The revelations are documented in a new book by Juan Reinaldo Sanchez "The Double Life of Fidel Castro." Sanchez fled Cuba in 2008.

According to Sanchez, the decision to get into the drug trafficking business wasn't just a financial one.  Castro also hoped to tear at the moral fabric of the United States by getting more of its citizens addicted to cocaine.

In an Sunday article in the New York Post, Sanchez described Castro's thinking:

"His reasoning was as follows:If the Yanks were stupid enough to use drugs that came from Colombia, not only was that not his problem — as long as it was not discovered, that is — but, in addition, it served his revolutionary objectives in the sense that it corrupted and destabilized American society. Icing on the cake: It was a means of bringing in cash to finance subversion."

Sanchez also claims that, when the American government became suspicious of Castro's dealings, he had several of the top generals involved in the program executed so as to cover up any signs of impropriety.

Sanchez himself was thrown in jail by Castro in 1994 after Castro became distrustful of the bodyguard.

Additionally, Sanchez says that Fidel's brother, Raul Castro, who is now the public face of the Cuban government, feared that his brother would kill him, as well - and that this led to Raul becoming an alcoholic.
