We’ve all been there before. You’re sitting in a movie theater, watching a gripping piece of cinematic genius, when suddenly….you have to pee. That extra large Mountain Dew you drank during the first hour doesn’t seem like such a great idea now, does it?
Well, in the Philippines, they have the same problem. Except replace the moviegoers with traffic cops and replace the movie with Pope Francis.
Gridlocked traffic is expected to be so bad when the Pope visits the country next week that the government of Manila is requiring the city’s 2,000 traffic enforcers to wear adult diapers.
The move is intended to prevent traffic cops from having to run off to use the facilities in the middle of their shifts, which would obviously make the already terrible gridlock even worse.
But, traffic cops aren’t the only ones who are being encouraged to wear diapers during the papal visit. The city is also encouraging the citizens who will wait for hours to see Pope Francis to get some absorbent undergarments, as well. Priests, nuns, seminarians, and the elderly are all being told that investing in some "Depends" may be a good idea.
City authorities are saying that there will simply not be enough portable toilets to accommodate all of the Pope’s adoring, Filipino fans.
“If you attend an event that will last for 24 hours, you cannot go around looking for a [portable toilet],” said Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman, Francis Tolentino,
Despite the fact that this idea is totally gross, Tolentino says that the idea has been “well-received” by the traffic enforcers.
Right.
When asked if he himself will be wearing a diaper for the Pope’s visit Tolentino says that he will “try,” but may not need to, since he apparently has “less hydration” than his traffic officials.
It is unclear whether this idea will catch on in the United States. We all certainly hope so, am I right?
But, in the Philippines, they are clearly leaving nothing to chance when it comes to the Pontiff's visit. And apparently, the citizens are so excited about Pope Francis coming to town, that they are literally wetting themselves.
So far, the Pope has yet to comment on the Filipino diaper situation.
