The Football Association is being accused of “sexism” after it made the mistake of referencing the fact that members of England’s women's soccer team are “mothers, partners and daughters.”

The incident began when the England Football Association Twitter account posted a congratulatory message to the Lionesses team upon the team’s return from the Women’s World Cup:

Some, however, interpreted the tweet as sexist:

As a result of the outrage, the FA quickly removed the tweet and began issuing apologies.

The content editor for the FA, James Callow, sent out a series of tweets:

A spokesperson for the FA also stated:

“The full story was a wider homecoming feature attempting to reflect the many personal stories within the playing squad as has been told throughout the course of the tournament. However, we understand that an element of the story appears to have been taken out of context and the opening paragraph was subsequently revised to reflect that fact.”

According to the BBC, the linked article in the offending tweet also referred to the women as “mothers, partners and daughters”. The language has since been removed from the article.
