UPDATE 6:10 P.M. EST:

A suspected suicide bomber was shot after setting off an explosion in Brussels Central Station on Tuesday.

Officials said the suspect had been “neutralized” by Belgian troops and that the situation was under control.

It is unclear whether he is dead or alive.

Federal prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt told reporters that the incident is being treated as a "terrorist attack," according to Reuters.

Witnesses told reporters that the suspect had cried “Allahu Akbar” and detonated an explosive on a luggage cart, Sky News reports.

The suspect has been described as a man in his 30s, who was wearing black jeans, a white shirt, and had wires wrapped around his waist.

“A spokeswoman for the city's prosecutor's office, Ine Van Wymersch, told VRT network no one else was injured and the damage was limited,” Fox News reports.

“Federal police confirmed to VTM News the bomb squad conducted a controlled explosion on an explosives belt.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

A person wearing explosives in a Brussels train station has been “neutralized,” local police say.

Officials say the "incident involving an individual" is under control.

There were reports of a loud bang at Brussels Central Station. Local media say that a man wearing a “bomb belt” set off a small explosion and that he has since been shot and captured by law enforcement.

The train station has been evacuated. Military and a bomb disposal unit are on scene. An investigation is ongoing.

The U.S. embassy in Brussels has warned all Americans to avoid the area.

“The city has been on high alert for more than 18 months since Brussels-based Islamic State militants carried out attacks in Paris that killed 130 people there in November 2015 and later bombed Brussels airport and the city's metro in March last year,” Reuters reports. “Those bombings killed 32 people.”
