A 76-year-old Florida homeowner shot a 51-year-old man during an attempted burglary after the suspect struggled with his wife.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says they arrived at a home early Wednesday last week to find Robert Jackson outside suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Jackson allegedly broke into an area home through a front window by using a rock.

WTSP reports:

Once inside, deputies say he ran into 74-year-old Sherry Treadwell and "began to struggle with her physically."

Sherry's husband, 76-year-old John Treadwell, heard Sherry screaming his name in distress and saw the altercation.

"Fearing for his and his wife's safety, John retrieved his firearm and shot Jackson once in the right shoulder," the sheriff's office wrote.

Jackson fled from the home and then reportedly attempted to break into a different house before being stopped by authorities. He was taken to the hospital and treated for his shoulder injury.
