Amid a wave of anti-cop sentiment in some of America's largest cities, two NYPD officers were allegedly denied service at a Brooklyn Dunkin' Donuts.
The incident was reported by the New York Post, who spoke with law enforcement sources that filled them in on the details. According to the sources, the two officers were assigned to the 73rd Precinct's detective squad.
The two cops reportedly approached the counter only to be ignored by a cashier, who instead asked to take the order of the man standing behind them. After the man responded, "These two guys were in front of me," the cashier allegedly replied "Yeah, I know, but I don't serve cops."
A manager at the Dunkin' Donuts disputed this account, saying, “These two men in shirts and ties — who I later found out were police — must have never come to this Dunkin’ Donuts before, because instead of waiting in the line where you order, they waited at the counter where you pick up your order.”
“You can see on the security tape: they stand here for five minutes, while other customers were being served. One customer even ordered ice cream, and they must’ve not liked that because they left the store,” he added.
The manager refused to give his name, and denied the New York Post's request to see the security video.
In the aftermath of the incident, several calls have been made to the donut shop and asking why the location doesn't serve police.
President of the Detectives' Endowment Association Michael Palladino issued a statement claiming the officers were victims of discrimination, adding the incident was "disgraceful and it should not go unattended."
In the statement, Palladino also called for a boycott of Dunkin' Donuts until a corporate apology was issued.
He also blamed Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration for creating an anti-cop climate in New York.
"Political leaders in this city have encouraged this type of behavior by constantly demonizing cops and pushing their decriminalization agenda," he said, but admitted he believed this was an isolated incident.
Dunkin' Donuts did end up issuing an apology and contacted one of the affected officers to speak with him directly. In addition, Mayor Bill de Blasio chimed in, saying, "If it's what you describe, it's someone being really stupid and unfair to our police officers."
