Most people are well aware that celebrities tend to donate to liberals, as the Center for Responsive Politics has confirmed for the 2012 Presidential cycle.

According the the group, 181 celebrities made donations totalling $645,304 to President Obama. Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney pales in camparison, with just $28,500 in donations given through 8 celebrities.

OpenSecrets.org writes:

Contribution limits apply to everyone, famous or not, but many celebrities do give lots of money to political candidates, committees and outside spending groups. Individuals who work in movies and television make up the bulk of celebrity contributors that we are able to identify, and the vast majority of their donations go to Democratic candidates and parties or liberal causes (just as you probably guessed).

Of course, celebrities can give a lot more than money. Their support can generate headlines and buzz for a candidate or a cause. The value of that kind of publicity in politics? Priceless.

Among the top donors to President Obama from Hollywood include: Melanie Griffith, Cameron Crowe, Marlo Thomas, Ben Stiller, Quintin Tarantino, Jada Pinkett Smith and husband Will Smith, Steven Spielberg, Ed Norton, Tobey Maguire, George Clooney, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Among the top donors who are musicians: Nancy Sinatra, Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, Barbra Streisand, Randy Newman, William Adams, Bette Midler and John Legend.

Among authors: Stephen King, Johnathan Franzen, Daniel "Lemony Snicket" Handler and Rita Chopra.
