A high school student caught on video repeatedly slapping his teacher in the classroom has been nailed with two misdemeanor charges of assault on a government official by a sheriff who didn’t come to play.

The shocking video out of Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, shows the moment a black male student got into a verbal altercation with his white female teacher, who was calmly seated at her desk. The student proceeded to slap the woman in the face - which, to her credit, didn’t seem to rattle her, even as the other students in the classroom laughed. He then asked, “Want me to hit you again?” before slapping her once more and walking away.

“The f**k’s wrong with you? What you gonna do, still sit in that chair ’cause you a bitch? Ain’t nobody even coming, you got slapped. Bitch go back to teaching,” the student said.

A warrant was quickly issued for his arrest by the Forsyth Sheriff’s Office, who also hit the kid with one misdemeanor charge of making threats.

“We should hold those who teach and educate our children to the highest regard,” Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. said.
“Our hope and our prayer at the FCSO is that we recognize that we as a community must bring order not only to our community but our children. We are praying for wholeness for those students who witnessed this and the educator involved.”

The DA agreed, adding, "We want one message to be delivered today: ‘This isn’t about the color of your skin, this isn’t about your political affiliation, today is about one thing. Sending a message to the teachers out there, that law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office support you, we care about the job you do.'”

The school principal has also promised disciplinary action on top of whatever criminal consequences the young man will face.

“Please know this video is not reflective of our expectations of students at Parkland High School. We are working with district staff to address this immediately and ensure behavior like this is not tolerated in our school and district.”

In a culture where student assault against other students and teachers has become almost commonplace and often go ignored, it's nice to see at least one district stepping up and saying the violence won't be tolerated. Let's see if it works.
