At a time when robberies and smash-and-grab looting seems almost commonplace, it's rare for a video to actually send shockwaves through a community. And yet, that's exactly what just happened to one immigrant family whose American Dream was just obliterated within seconds.

Absolutely stunning footage out of Oakland, California - because where else? - that went viral on Friday shows the moment when eight armed thugs busted into a family-owned jewelry store and smashed in all the display cases before making off with nearly every single piece in the store. The harrowing surveillance video shows 69-year-old Diane, one of the owners of Phuong Jewelry, screaming and running for her life as the thieves begin smashing the jewelry displays and shoving loot into bags.

Within a minute, the robbers, who flaunted guns, had cleared out roughly 90 percent of the store’s inventory until Diane’s husband came barging in with a gun of his own. The thieves then loaded into two getaway cars and fled the scene, leaving behind a trashed store and a devastated family.

The robbery occurred in broad daylight at around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday in Oakland’s Chinatown, with the family saying that while it wasn’t their first robbery, it’s certainly the worst they’ve ever experienced since opening 40 years ago.

The family said their insurance had lapsed thanks to rising premium costs. A GoFundMe set up for repairs has raised just shy of $13,000 of its $50,000 goal as of Friday afternoon.
