This Christmas ad might have just unseated the adorable John Lewis penguin ad as the best of the season – and it takes the unusual subject of World War I.

In the ad for British supermarket Sainsbury’s, British and German soldiers sing “Silent Night” in their respective languages, before ceasing fighting and exchanging gifts. The ad is also a joint promotion for chocolate bars, with all the proceeds of the chocolate going to a charity for the Royal British Legion.

The ad is based on an actual historical event: on Christmas in 1914, German and British stopped fighting, sang carols, exchanged gifts of cigarettes and plum puddings, and played soccer. The day became known as the “Christmas Truce of 1914.”

Watch the video – this one will bring tears to your eyes.
