Bernie Sanders Warns of 'Hidden Messages' in Trump's Tweets

Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) went on Conan O'Brien's late night show Tuesday to warn Americans about President-elect Trump’s “scary” intentions.

When asked about Trump’s tweet claiming he would have won the popular vote if not for all of the illegal immigrants who voted unlawfully, Sanders told the audience this meant Trump was trying to make it harder for eligible minorities to vote.

“This is what is scary about it,” Sanders said. “When he says that, he’s really sending a signal to Republicans all over this country, Republican leaders. And what he’s saying is, ‘We have got to suppress the vote. We have got to make it harder for poor people, people of color, immigrants, elderly people to participate because they may be voting against us.’ And that’s scary stuff.”

That’s quite a conclusion for Sanders to gather from Trump’s tweet.

To top that, the former Democratic presidential candidate added, “My own view is we have to work over time to bring more people into the political process, not make it harder for people to participate, but that’s really what he’s saying in that tweet.”

That's an interesting perspective from Bernie, considering he's talking about a president-elect who received the most votes in Republican primary history.

As if this wasn’t enough speculation, Sanders went on to explain another “hidden message” supposedly buried in another controversial Trump tweet, in which the president-elect suggested jailing people who burn the American flag.

When asked about it, Sanders said, “There’s a hidden message in that. And that is, ‘Be careful if you are prepared to dissent.’ Now, the Supreme Court has said that is within the constitutional framework…That’s a form of expression. But what he’s really saying is, ‘If you want to really dissent, be careful. It’s not just the American flag here. We’re watching you.’ That’s what’s scary about that.”

More fear-mongering conjecture from Sanders, as he makes no effort to mention the Flag Protection Act of 2005 – a bill co-sponsored by then-Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) proposing American flag-burners be jailed for one year. (Reminder: Sanders endorsed Clinton in the 2016 presidential race.)

It seems Democrats are keen on forgetting Clinton's 2005 proposal. An email was sent out by the Democratic National Committee to subscribers on Wednesday referencing Trump's American flag tweet as a signal for an "all-out assault on our First Amendment rights" and asking for donations to "fight back" against Trump's "attacks on our constitutional liberties" -- the same liberties that Hillary Clinton attempted to ban back in 2005.
