'Baby Drop Off' Box Installed in NW Indiana

Don’t know what to do with all those unwanted babies? Come on down and drop off your extras in the new “Safe Haven Baby Box.”

In all seriousness, a “baby box” was installed at the Woodburn Volunteer Fire Department in Indiana in April. Women can anonymously drop off their unwanted babies in the padded and climate-controlled box, and emergency service personnel will attend to the baby within minutes.

It's is a good thing that women who cannot care for or do not want their babies have a safe place to leave them, ensuring they will be attended to and taken care of. But should getting rid of a human being be as easy as dropping off a library book?

Volunteer firewoman Monica Kelsey said that the Knights of Columbus of Indiana are going to pay for the first 100 boxes. Each box cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000.

 According to the Associated Press:

The boxes are equipped with a security system that notifies emergency personnel when a baby is dropped off. Emergency responders can get to the child within minutes.

“This is not criminal,” Kelsey said. “This is legal. We don’t want to push women away.”

Because of the Safe Haven law, which applies in every state in the U.S., mothers can relinquish their “unharmed” baby to the proper authorities without fear of prosecution.

We live in a “throw away” society, and now, with these boxes, we can legally throw away human beings.
