A cold surge is looming on the horizon.

According to The Weather Channel, an arctic outbreak will bring the coldest air of the season next week starting Monday.

“So early in the season, but we are poised for a pure arctic outbreak coming down from northern Canada this week."

Areas that can expect to feel the frigid air the most are the northern Plains, northern Rockies, and Midwest.

"The cold this time will last longer and will be more widespread than other cold surges we have seen so far this season,” reported The Weather Channel.

Reportedly, wind chills will be in the single digits for much of the northern Plains and Midwest, and a few record cool high temperatures are possible.

The cold front is expected to reach the Northeast by Wednesday and to remain below average for the central and eastern regions through the end of the week.

"Some snow is also possible from the northern Rockies to the Upper Midwest and perhaps into the Northeast as the cold blasts into the U.S."
