At the age of 39, Kate Allat suffered a stroke. After the stroke, Kate spent 10 days in a coma after which she came around but was unable to move, communicate, or even breathe on her own. This is called “locked-in syndrome” when someone is mentally alert but cannot communicate. You are, however, able to hear, feel, and think. The medical personnel working on Kate believed she was brain dead but her mind was working properly. While unable to communicate she overheard the medical personal talking to her family about switching off life support. After two weeks, Kate was finally able to communicate with her family and the medical personnel to tell them she was mentally alert.

Kate is now fully recovered and is working hard to keep people aware of strokes and this syndrome. While Kate was suffering from this syndrome she felt embarrassed being in the state she was in. Kate said the nurses lowered their expectations of her and she was even left naked in the shower seat for 20 minutes after being given a shower. Kate stated that she “wasn’t saved the embarrassment. The indignity is there and it’s horrible, so mortifying.” She wants those in this situation to be treated the way you would want to be treated. Kate has started an organization to help fight strokes and is working hard to help those who are not as lucky as she was. Kate is determined to “beat the drum” for those who cannot do it for themselves.
