An eight-year-old boy is being called "quick-thinking" for helping save his mother and dog after they fell into a frozen lake.

Caden Medernach dialed 911 on Sunday as his mother, Cathy, ventured out into the lake behind their home in Aurora, Ill., to rescue their Golden Retriever, Bailey, who had fallen through the ice.

Cathy accidentally tipped over her canoe into the freezing water, leaving Caden to save the day.

Caden first called his father, Eric, who told him to dial 911.

Thanks to Caden, rescue workers showed up to the scene and were able to recover Cathy and Bailey from the lake.

"Life was passing before my eyes, I was thinking, 'I'm going to die in this water, as well as my dog," Cathy said.

"I was scared," Caden admitted. "I did good," he later add, proud of what he did in such a dire situation.
