Teachers gave Lizeth Villanueva, a seventh grader at Anthony Aguirre Junior High in Channelview, Texas, a “Most Likely to Become a Terrorist” certificate – the day after Monday’s terrorist attack in Manchester, England.

Villanueva, an academic honors student who has never been disciplined by the school, was given the certificate in a mock ceremony, which she says the teachers considered to be a joke.

But, Villanueva's mother, Ena, was not amused, telling KHOU that this is no time for this type of humor:

It doesn’t look good at all, especially coming from a teacher, a grown-up woman. It doesn’t look good because everything that’s going on right now.

The school’s principal has since apologized for the joke at a school meeting and Channelview ISD (Independent School District) released a statement of apology, saying that the teachers involved have been disciplined:

The Channelview ISD Administration would like to apologize for the insensitive and offensive fake mock awards that were given to students in a classroom. Channelview ISD would like to assure all students, parents and community members that these award statements and ideals are not representative of the district’s vision, mission and educational goals for our students.

The teachers involved in this matter have been disciplined according to district policy and the incident is still under investigation.
